As part of their strategic collaboration, QinetiQ has collaborated to showcase how Metasonixx’s Sonoblind air panels can be engineered to replace the grille in front of a vehicle’s engine, providing simultaneous benefits of temperature cooling and noise reduction.
In conventional vehicle designs, noise reduction has traditionally been achieved by adding mass between the noise source and the external environment, a technique that commonly limits airflow and hinders ventilation.
QinetiQ, an industry leader in advanced material research, has thought of leveraging acoustic metamaterials to address this challenge and contacted Metasonixx for a joint project. Metasonixx has therefore proposed a solution based on its award-winning SonoBlind Air®, a metamaterial engineered to function as an interferential filter for sound while letting air and light through.
QinetiQ and Metasonixx completed the phases of design, manufacturing and in-situ testing over a few weeks in a swift and agile manner, collaborating closely to explore the practical application of innovative technologies in real-world environments. Conducting experiments at QinetiQ’s metamaterials hub in Farnborough, the team tested various panel models with different surface areas to assess airflow efficiency, reaching up to 90% noise reduction. Both companies are now working to advance and expand this technology for future use in both civil and military applications.
